Jean’s Letter

In 1773, Jean Godin wrote a 7,000 word letter to La Condamine, detailing Isabel’s extraordinary story.  La Condamine published it in an updated edition of his Relation abrégée d’un fait dans l’intérieur de l’Amérique Méridionale. In 1827, a printer in Edinburgh published an English translation of the letter, which he titled: “Account of the Adventures  of Madame Godin Des Odonais in Passing Down the River of the Amazons in the year 1770.” The printer wrote that it presented “as extraordinary a series of perils, adventures, and escapes as are anywhere to be found on record.”

The map below details where Isabel was lost on the Bobonaza River.
